Belwind Offshore Windpark

In September 2009, construction began on the 165 MW Belwind offshore wind farm, consisting of 55 wind turbines and 1 offshore high-voltage station, on the Bligh Bank, 46 to 52 kilometres off the coast of Zeebrugge in Belgium.

Challenges in Contracting

In 2008 and 2009, Aratis supported Econcern during the project development phase in contracting the Balance of Plant contract and the wind turbine supply and service contract. For this project, Aratis provided two contract managers who were in the lead during the contract negotiations for both contracts.

Belwind is the largest offshore wind farm ever built, located further from the coast than its predecessors and in deeper water. Furthermore, Belwind would apply non-recourse financing with stringent requirements from potential financiers. Contracting became extra challenging due to these aspects. Our experienced contract managers were consistently able to incorporate the various, sometimes conflicting, requirements of all stakeholders into the contracts.
