Container Exchange Route (CER)
The Port of Rotterdam Authority is currently constructing the Container Exchange Route (CER). This will connect the container terminals, empty depots, distribution companies and customs on the Maasvlakte. This will bundle container flows in one location, eliminating the need for trains, barges and feeder ships to travel to different terminals. The CER will make it possible to minimise container exchange costs. This will improve the hinterland and transshipment product and strengthen the competitive position of the port of Rotterdam as a container hub. It is expected that more than 1 million containers per year will ultimately be exchanged. The CER consists of civil infrastructure (approx. 14 kilometres of concrete track and three large engineering structures over the railway) between and on the terminal sites and the modification and construction of ICT infrastructure. The scope of the civil infrastructure will be realised with the aid of design & construct and construction team agreements.
