Tata Steel IJmuiden

Tata Steel in IJmuiden is one of the largest integrated steelworks in Europe, with an estimated production capacity of approximately 6.7 to 7 million tonnes of steel per year and over 9,200 employees at the site itself (over 11,500 throughout the Netherlands).

The site has strong ambitions in the area of sustainability, with various programmes aimed at reducing pollutant emissions and future plans to switch entirely to green steel based on hydrogen.

Heracless: transition to “green steel”

Heracless (“Hydrogen-Era-Carbon-Less”) is the planned transition from conventional blast furnaces to a sustainable production route based on Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) combined with an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), with the ultimate goal of CO₂-neutral steel production. Initially, natural gas and electricity will be used, with a future switch to green hydrogen.

Heracless is a crucial step in Tata Steel IJmuiden's sustainability strategy, with concrete objectives in terms of climate, circularity and innovation. The current phase — including the submitted EIA, assessment and temporary suspension of the permit procedure — underlines the complexity and importance of good contract management.
