Waterlandseweg bicycle bridge

The Province of Flevoland has constructed a cycle and pedestrian bridge over the widened Waterlandseweg (N305) and the Hoge Vaart in Almere, near the Groene Kathedraal landscape artwork and the Stichtsekant business park.

The construction of the cycle and pedestrian bridge ensures that bus passengers who alight at the Stichtsekant bus stop can cross safely, while traffic on Waterlandseweg can continue to flow freely. The installation of a lift also allows disabled people to use the bus stop at the bridge.

From the contract formation phase onwards, as much scope as possible was left for the contractor to distinguish itself. For example, the contractor had the choice between steel and concrete for the materialisation of the bridge (steel was chosen) and was free to determine its shape and exact location. To further stimulate design freedom, the contract award focused largely on the subject of design. In order to properly assess this design, a design committee was set up with representation from the Almere municipal aesthetics committee.
