A16 Rotterdam - New motorway between the A13 and A16

Rijkswaterstaat is constructing the A16 Rotterdam, the new link between the A16 at Terbregseplein and the A13 at Rotterdam The Hague Airport. The new motorway will improve accessibility and quality of life in the north-eastern part of Rotterdam.

A16 Rotterdam

Preparations for the construction of the A16 Rotterdam began in 2017. The new motorway is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The project is being carried out on behalf of Rijkswaterstaat by the De Groene Boog construction consortium, consisting of BESIX, Dura Vermeer, Van Oord and the TBI companies Croonwolter&dros and Mobilis.

Energy-neutral motorway along the north-east side of Rotterdam

The A16 Rotterdam is being constructed as an energy-neutral motorway on the north-east side of Rotterdam. An important part of the project is a semi-submerged tunnel that will be built through the Lage Bergse Bos. In addition, noise barriers and earth walls will be used in combination with sound-absorbing asphalt to reduce noise pollution.

The construction of the new A16 Rotterdam is a response to the daily traffic jams between the A13 near Overschie and the A20 between Kleinpolderplein and Terbregseplein. To avoid these traffic jams, road users take to local roads, causing these roads to become congested as well.

By means of a direct connection between the A12 and A20, the project provides for improved traffic flow on the main road network and a reduction in traffic pressure on the underlying road network. The aim is to improve accessibility and quality of life in the region.

Contract management

Aratis contributed to the contract management of the project by deploying a senior contract advisor to supervise one of the sub-areas of the project (11 km of new highway) and to supervise the maintenance department of the contractor De Groene Boog in connection with the performance of 20 years of maintenance on the new tunnel and roads (DBFM agreement). In terms of content, this involved all tasks associated with contract management, plus stakeholder issues with the municipalities of Rotterdam and Lansingerland, the Province of South Holland and the HHSK and HHD water boards.
