Bunge - Sustainable oil refinery in Westzaan
An ultra-modern oil refinery is being built on the banks of the North Sea Canal in Westzaan: Project Westzaan.
This new Bunge Loders Croklaan factory is one of the company's largest investments in the European edible oils market. It combines the production capacity of the current sites in Wormerveer and Rotterdam and is equipped with innovative technologies that minimise environmental impact and maximise efficiency.
In addition to the refinery, the complex on the HoogTij industrial estate will also have large storage facilities, a quay for ship traffic and a completely new energy and utility infrastructure. Sustainability is at the heart of the project: the factory will be built to the strictest environmental standards, with energy-efficient processes, reuse of waste streams and a design that minimises waste production. The Westzaan project aims to reduce energy consumption by 40% and CO₂ emissions by up to 90% by 2030.
This strategic move strengthens Bunge's position as a leading player in the global food and agribusiness sector. By optimising the production and distribution of high-quality, sustainable oils, the company can better respond to the growing demand for responsible food solutions – both in Europe and worldwide.
The first pile was driven in December 2023, with commissioning scheduled for 2026. With Westzaan, Bunge is not only building a more efficient supply chain, but also a more sustainable future for the Amsterdam region.
